RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MEETING

MINUTES OF AUGUST 20, 2003

SPECIAL MEETING

ATTENDANCE

This meeting was called to order at 7:40 pm.

Present at this meeting was Tom Badcock, Lisa Cooney, Nancy Calogera, Rich Bezeg, Joe DeSimone, Joe Dunn, Kerry Frew, Gerard Haran, Bob Pepe, Kevin Ruffler, Tom Stead, and Councilman Kevin Calogera (left early). Councilman Baker came in late.

Absent from this meeting was: Ray Battaglino, Frances DiRocco, Janet Phillips, and Councilman Greene.

SPECIAL MEETING – ITEM TO BE DISCUSSED

This meeting was called at the request of Kevin Calogera to discuss why the Code of Conduct was taken off the council agenda. The Council said they did not have enough input from the different leagues on this item, however, Tom mentions that he had raised his hand at the meeting to give Council input on the responses he had gotten from the leagues, but he was not called on. Tom mentions that all the leagues had positive feedback and this matter should be allowed to go forward.

Gerard mentions that Governor Jim McGreevey asked municipalities to initiate their own policy concerning youth sports. The Council asked us to take this initiative and the Board did so by having a special sub committee chaired by Denis Kilduff. The subcommittee came up with a final draft which was approved by the Recreation Advisory Board and this was submitted to Council.

This document has been approved by Legal Dept. All the youth leagues in town are in agreement with this Code of Conduct. The umpire association is in agreement. This committee is still in agreement that this Code of Conduct should be recommended for approval by Council.

Kevin Calogera mentions he will be putting this back on the next council meeting’s agenda. It is important that members be present to make sure this gets passed.

Councilman Baker arrived and Gerard mentions to him that all concerns have been addressed since Bill asked to table the ordinance request for Code of Conduct. Bill asks if there has been input from the umpires. Bill wants to make sure that there would be no problems with the umpire organization. Tom mentioned that this Code of Conduct would not affect the umpires and the rules of the game. The Code of Conduct is for the league and the Recreation Dept. to enforce. Bill Baker is comfortable with the Recreation Advisory Board supporting this ordinance and he will support it.

This meeting adjourned at 8:30 pm. The next meeting will be held on September 17, 2003.
