RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 17, 2003
ATTENDANCE
This meeting was called to order at 7:45 pm by Gerard Haran, Chairperson.
In attendance at this time were: Tom Badcock, Lisa Cooney, Ray Battaglino, Joe DeSimone, Fran DiRocco, Joe Dunn, Kerry Frew, Denis Kilduff (entered at 8:10 pm), Bob Pepe, Tom Stead, Councilman Bill Baker, Councilman Rich Greene (entered at 8:05 pm).
Absent from this meeting were: Rich Bezeg, Nancy Calogera, Janet Phillips, Kevin Ruffler and Councilman Kevin Calogera. Carol Norberg was present to take the minutes.
Al DiRocco arrived at 8:30 to sit in on the meeting.
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
The minutes of the special August meeting have not been completed. They will be ready for the October meeting.
ITEMS TO BE DISCUSSED
The 9/11 Memorial was dedicated this weekend and Joe Dunn mentioned that it was a proud moment for Old Bridge and how beautiful the memorial looks. Gerard mentions that the Paver Program has been reopened and pavers can be purchased for $100.
Members expressed praise for the new Fall Recreation Program Brochure.
Code of Conduct ordinance (first reading) had been passed.
Joe DeSimone asks if the Astroturf at Geick Park can be looked.
RECREATION/CAMP ROBIN UPDATE
Lisa Cooney mentioned that fall registration is under way, with this being the first time people have been registered over the web. She mentioned that Dr. Brunsden will again be sponsoring the Halloween Spooktacular this year with approximately a $6,000 donation. Lisa asks if members would be able to help out for the event on November 1st or on the two week nights for the older kids (Oct. 29th and 30th).
Registration for Camp Robin’s fall programs are underway.
CAPITAL PROJECTS UPDATE
Laurence Harbor Recreation Building – 98% complete. Tom commends Lisa on a good job that she did with this building.
2. Cliffwood Beach Rec. Center - Contract has been awarded to pave the parking lot and also the basketball court.
Mannino Park – Waiting to hear from the State regarding us getting the small piece of land.
Golf Course – On hold right now. Public needs to be educated about this project on the pros and cons, possibly through open meeting forums.
YMCA – Kick-off meeting is now set for October 21, 2003.
OLD BUSINESS
Joe DeSimone mentions he has signatures on his petition for the skate park in Cliffwood Beach, Laurence Harbor sections of town. Joe Dunn suggested that perhaps we can ask the county to incorporate a skate park in their park by the beachfront.
Code of Conduct – Denis Kilduff is in appreciation of the ordinance being accepted and passed on the first reading. He thanked Kevin Calogera and the subcommittee for all the hard work they did.
Theft of the bleachers was brought up and asked if anyone had been caught. No one was ever apprehended, as per Tom. He mentions that mowers had been stolen from the Parks yard earlier in the month.
NEW BUSINESS
- Joe Dunn mentions that he got a letter from Jamie O’Kane that the Central Park playground surface needs to be redone. Tom says it is one of the projects on the list, but there is not a cash capital account any longer. These smaller jobs have not been included in the budget for a few years.
- Bill Baker mentions that $6.2 million was given to some towns in the county to be used to repair their parks, Old Bridge was not one of them. He asks Tom if he can look into it and find out why our town did not get any funds.
- Bill asks if the Recreation Dept. can recognize the district champions in the town. In order to find out who are district champions, a letter will be sent to all the leagues asking for this information.
- Names for nominees for Volunteer of the month will be presented at next month’s meeting.
