RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
NOTES OF MEETING MAY 22, 2002
NO QUORUM
ATTENDANCE: Tom Badcock, Director; Lisa Cooney, Assistant Recreation Director; Richard Bezeg; Nancy Calogera; Joseph DeSimone (entered at 8 pm); Joe Dunn; Denis Kilduff (entered at 8:30, meeting had just ended); Tim Kozlak; Janet Phillips; Joe Pruiti; and Councilman Bill Baker. Carol Norberg was present to take the minutes.
Absent from this meeting was: Fran DiRocco, Gerard Haran, Robert Pepe, Frank Piccillo, Kevin Ruffler, Tom Stead, Paul Taguer, and Councilmen Rich Greene and Ed Testino.
The meeting was called to order at 7:45 PM
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes of April meeting cannot be approved due to lack of quorum.
RECREATION/CAMP ROBIN UPDATE:
Lisa Cooney explains that summer camp registration is progressing and that Sandburg is the site that has filled so far. For next year she will be looking into additional sites for this area of Old Bridge in order to be able to accommodate more children. Janet asks about field hockey camp for the younger children. Tom explains that we can try to add it for next year.
Tom mentions that the 13th annual Camp Robin Golf Tournament was held and was very successful with 75 golfers. Outback Steakhouse catered the dinner at the Elk’s Club.
ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION:
MIDDLESEX COUNTY BEACH/PARK PROJECTS
Janet will try to get someone from the county parks to come to the June meeting to talk about their plans and for the Rec. Board to give them their input on this project. A reminder letter will be sent out to Rec. Board members if someone from the county will be present at the June meeting. Tim Kozlak mentions that there are concerns about the brush and garbage on the Township side by the boardwalk.
LAKE LUCERNE
Tom has it on the schedule for next week.
RECREATION COMMITTEE TERM ORDINANCES
Tom says he will contact Legal Dept. to clarify the two proposed ordinances on staggered terms that was mailed out to all members of the Rec. Board. Janet liked the ordinance that called for a 2-year staggered term.
TEEN RECREATION CENTER, LAURENCE HARBOR
Tom explains that outside renovations are done. The township will need to sit down with the architect and decide on the plans. Work should start in the fall.
Civic Center Teen Center: Janet was asking if two age groups can be split with the 6th, 7th and 8th grades in one group, and the older kids going at another time.
Nancy Calogera suggests that pictures of the center be taken so that kids can see what it looks like (post them on the web).
GOLF UPDATE
The second meeting is set for June 13th. Jim McLaughlin, golf course architect, is available to come to this meeting.
YMCA UPDATE
RFP’s (request for proposal) were sent out to 6-7 firms. Tom mentions that they have been having interviews with the firms and they have been giving their presentations. The first contract will be for preliminary design and site selection.
Site selection, fund raising and membership fees for the YMCA were discussed.
CAPITAL PROJECTS UPDATE:
Tom stated the following:
Laurence Harbor Senior Center - 80% complete. July opening anticipated.
Health Bldg. - 80% complete
Ticetown Soccer Park Lot - (Phase I). Bid specs are being put together.
Sayrewoods South Little League Drainage Study - contract was awarded.
Laurence Harbor Rec. Center - renovations will be started in the fall.
Cedar Ridge II Tract - in condemnation in the court system
OLD BUSINESS
NEW BUSINESS
Bill Baker brings up the attendance issue of the members of this committee. Bill requests Carol to give him, Rich Greene and Ed Testino the attendance sheets for the committee with the minutes.
Bill states from now on Carol will not be making reminder and follow-up calls to see if members will be at the meetings. Members are now required to call Carol only if they are not able to make the monthly meetings.
