The Old Bridge Public Library is seeking a part-time custodian/cleaner

Position Description: Custodian/Cleaner , Part-Time

Reports to: Library Director

Job Description: Under the direction of the Library Director and with the assistance of contracted services and maintenance personnel the custodian assists and performs tasks necessary for the operation, repair and cleaning of the central and branch buildings.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assists the contracted services personnel in the maintenance and cleanliness of the Library’s buildings and grounds.
  • Maintains vendor files and building documentation as assigned
  • Reports to the Director the need for routine, preventive and emergency cleaning and maintenance.
  • Assists in maintaining an inventory of all tools, supplies and equipment belonging to the Library.
  • Monitors projects in renovation, repair and keeps the Director informed of progress and concerns.
  • Acts as backup to Maintainer/ Driver when assigned
  • Works evenings, days and weekends for the number of hours as assigned and also must be available to be on-call, as needed.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

  • Knowledge of building cleaning protocols, equipment and preventive maintenance.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and accident prevention.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with diverse staff, officials, contractors and the public.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe working environment in all weather conditions.
  • Reports all items of concern to the Director in a timely fashion.
  • Dusts, cleans and polishes furniture, fixtures, shelving, woodwork and equipment as necessary.
  • Removes graffiti from furniture, walls, and other surfaces as necessary
  • Performs emergency clean-ups as needed
  • Assists contractors by carrying tools and materials, by placing and removing ladders, by cleaning up after work has been done and by doing other varied tasks as necessary
  • Washes and cleans windows; sweeps, washes, strips, waxes and polishes floors; sweeps, vacuums and shampoos carpeting.
  • Ensures that restrooms are stocked with supplies as necessary
  • Assists with trash and recycling collection as needed.
  • Participates in keeping the Custodians’ Work Room neat and orderly
  • Shovels snow or ice and spread sand or salt on icy surfaces to prevent slipping when necessary.
  • Sets up public meeting room for programs and meetings by assisting performers in moving and setting up equipment.
  • Cooperates with Township departments.
  • Maintains an appropriate appearance in dress and manner at all times.

Qualifications:

  1. Successful experience in doing similar tasks in a like environment
  2. Must be able to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends; also must be available to be on-call, as needed, to respond to emergencies.
  3. Ability to meet the physical demands of the job including heavy lifting and moving, exposure to elements, repetitive motions (such as bending, lifting, stretching).
  4. Requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel to branch and other locations.
  5. Clean driving record for last five years required with insurability by Library’s insurance carrier

 This is a Part-Time position for 25 hours per week. Salary is $20.91 per hour. Employees in this category are represented by AFSCME NJ Council 63, Local 3231 and contribute to the pension system.
