(Trenton) – Route 18 southbound is scheduled to be closed and detoured overnight next week as the Route 18 drainage and pavement rehabilitation project advances in East Brunswick, Middlesex County. In the event of inclement weather, work will take place the following night.
Monday, September 15 and Tuesday, September 16 – Tices Lane to Milltown Road
Beginning at 10 p.m. Monday, September 15 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, September 16 and continuing on Tuesday, September 16 at the same time, Route 18 southbound is scheduled to be closed from Tices Lane to Milltown Road. The closure is necessary to install water main and drainage. The following detour will be in place:
Route 18 southbound Detour:
Motorists on Route 18 southbound will be directed to turn right onto Tices Lane
Turn left onto Harts Lane
Turn left onto Milltown Road, back to Route 18 southbound Or
Turn left to take the ramp to South River/New Brunswick, back to Route 18 northbound
Wednesday, September 17 and Thursday, September 18 – Edgeboro Road to West Ferris Street
Beginning at 10 p.m. Wednesday, September 17 until 5 a.m. Thursday, September 18 and continuing on Thursday, September 18 at the same time, Route 18 southbound is scheduled to be closed from Edgeboro Road to West Ferris Street. The closure is necessary to install water main and drainage. The following detour will be in place:

Motorists on Route 18 southbound will be directed to stay right and take the ramp to Edgeboro Road/Old Bridge Turnpike/CR 527 South
Crossover Route 18
Turn right onto Old Bridge Turnpike/CR 527
Turn right onto West Ferris Street, back to Route 18 northbound
This work is part of the $86.1 million federally funded Route 18, East Brunswick, Drainage and Pavement Rehabilitation project that will make repairs on approximately four and a half miles of Route 18 in East Brunswick, Middlesex County. Work includes milling and paving, improvements to the drainage systems and storm water basins, utility relocation, installation of new sidewalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps and upgrading guiderail. Improvements will also be made to various intersections throughout the project limits. The project is expected to be completed in late 2027.
Variable messaging signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
